Start with the brief, not a blank page
Every assignment is a response to a question, a word count, a referencing style, and a marking rubric. Before you write a sentence, copy those constraints into a one-page brief. Note the module learning outcomes. If the brief asks you to “critically evaluate”, a descriptive summary will lose marks even if it is well written. If it asks for a case analysis, theory without application will look unfinished.
Use a three-part skeleton
Most undergraduate essays work as introduction, development, and conclusion. The introduction should name the question, define key terms, and preview your argument in two or three sentences. The middle should be a sequence of claims, each supported by evidence and a short analysis. The conclusion should answer the question directly and note limits — not introduce new sources. Keep paragraph openings as topic sentences so a marker can skim the logic.
Evidence is not the same as quotation
A referenced assignment is not a collage of quotes. Use sources to support a point you have already stated in your own words. After a citation, add a sentence that explains why the source matters for this brief. Mix textbooks, peer-reviewed articles, and, where allowed, policy or industry reports. Keep a running list of full references in the style your handbook requires (Harvard, APA, OSCOLA, IEEE, and so on).
Leave time for a cold read
Draft, then wait a few hours and read the piece as if you were marking it. Check that every section maps back to the question. Cut repeated ideas. Confirm that figures, tables, and appendices are labelled.
